Ewes are much smaller than males and weigh from 180 to 250 pounds. This breed is famous for its wool; the fiber is 25-33 microns in diameter and 2-3 inches in length. Mature animals give from 5 to 8 pounds of fleece.

This breed originated from crossbreeding Southdown rams and Norfolk Horned ewes. The breed was registered in 1810 and considered to be a great improvement over the both breeds the parents belong to. The weight of the rams varies from 250 to 350 pounds. Suffolk sheep breeders will provide pictures of the pets.
