Suffolk horses usually come in solid chesnut color (traditionally spelled with no "t"), ranging from light golden to dark brown. Seven shades are recognized. White markings are permissible, if they are not prominent and only confined to a star or white ankles. Other colors are disqualified.

The way in which the mane and tail of Suffolk horses are braided for the show ring is unique. The tail is braided to its end and then folded up and the mane is completely braided. Raffia is used in both mane and tail to make the horse look superb. Suffolk horses are traditionally presented in a smart manner and decorated with leather collars and bright ribbons. Stallions are presented in a black, brown or white show bridle. Suffolk horses wear special "shoe bevel" shoes, which are slightly larger and rounder than usual shoes to enhance the shape of the hoof.
