Suffolk Horses - Breeding

The breeding of Suffolk horses remains in the hands of those enthusiasts who saved them during the 1950's. The traditional ways of breeding often give ground to modern techniques. The number of purebred individuals is very small and the mare owners often have to travel many miles to a suitable stallion. Artificial insemination coupled with chilled or frozen semen has become widely used, but it makes horse ownership and breeding rather expensive. A champion quality stallion can be a good source of income.
Height: mares are 15-16 hands, stallions are up to 17 hands.
Weight: mature horses reach 2100 lbs; the average weight is 1800 lbs.
Suffolk Horses - Societies
The Suffolk Horse Society in Woodbridge is the oldest in the world; it was established in 1877. The main aim of this organization is to encourage breeding these unique horses by presenting grants and premiums. It organized a major display of Suffolk horses and published "The Stud Book".
An annual Ploughing Match for Suffolks is the only plowing match for a single breed. Having originated as a working breed, Suffolk horses have very functional conformation and are not often shown. This breed takes part in presentation and pulling competitions in England and the USA only. Suffolk horses are not subjected to the fads of the show ring.
